Wash the boat weekly through summer. That is the cadence we run for our maintenance clients, and it is the one that keeps gelcoat looking new instead of slowly hazing over.
Weekly is not fussy. It is the interval where a wash stays quick because nothing has had time to bond: a rinse, a soap, a towel, and you are done. Stretch it to monthly and that same wash turns into a scrubbing job.
What changes the cadence
- In the water vs. on a trailer: a boat that lives in a slip grows a waterline scum ring that wants attention weekly. A trailered boat rinsed after each trip can often go longer.
- How hard you run it: heavy weekend use, wakes, and constant lake spray add deposits faster than a boat that mostly sits.
- Dark gelcoat: dark hulls show every water spot and heat up more in the sun, so they reward frequent washing.
- Bird and spider traffic: docked boats collect droppings that are acidic and time-sensitive, etching gelcoat if they bake in the sun.
Why weekly beats catching up
Dirt on a boat is not static. Waterline scum, bird droppings, and organic film chemically bond to gelcoat the longer they sit under UV, and once bonded they no longer rinse off. That is the exact buildup that turns a wash into a compound job.
Wash weekly and none of it gets the time it needs to bond. Skip a month and you are not saving four washes, you are trading them for one expensive detail. Over a full season, the maintained boat almost always costs less and always looks better.
